Question

Artificial satellites use which of the following as a source of energy?

  1. Leclanche cell

  2. Dynamo

  3. Electric generator

  4. Solar cell

Solution

The correct option is D

Solar cell

Explanation for the correct option:

  1. If an object is launched from the earth into space so as to move around the earth, it is called an artificial satellite.
  2. A number of rockets are fired from the satellites at the proper times in order to establish it in the desired orbit, and once placed in the orbit with the correct speed for that orbit, it continues to move in the orbit under the attraction of the earth.

3. Artificial satellites are basically a device it needs energy to work. This is a large amount of energy, which we can't be to the satellite at an initial time.

4. But in space only solar energy is available. The solar cells on the satellite absorb sunlight and convert light energy into electricity.

5. So, in artificial satellites solar cells are used.

Explanation for the incorrect option(s):

A: Leclanche cell

  1. The Leclanché cell is a battery invented and patented by the French scientist Georges Leclanche in 1866.
  2. The battery contained an electrolyte of Ammonium chloride(NH4Cl), a cathode of carbon which is the positive terminal, a depolarizer of Manganese dioxide(MnO2) which acts as an oxidizer, and an anode of zinc which is the negative terminal (reductant).

B: Dynamo

  1. A dynamo is a type of electric generator that uses a commutator to produce direct current(DC).

C: Electric generator

  1. An electric generator is a type of device that converts the motive power that is the mechanical energy into electric power for use in an external circuit.

In space leclanche cell, electric generator, and dynamo are useless, because in space only solar energy is available. There is no electricity or air energy available to use a dynamo or generator.

Hence, option D is correct.
