Solution

The correct option is A

Sublimation

The explanation for the correct option:

(A) Camphor can easily be purified by the process of sublimation because camphor has the property of sublimise(The property in which a substance directly changes into a vapour phase from a solid state without converting into a liquid state).

The phenomenon is the result of the vapour pressure and temperature relationship.

The vapour pressure of any substance increases as the temperature increases. Sublimation will take place when total atmospheric pressure becomes less than the vapour pressure of a substance and melting does not occur because the temperature is not hot enough for melting.

In the case of camphor, the melting point camphor is 175 degrees Celcius and the temperature given to camphor is not that much enough that it can melt but as the vapour pressure is higher than the total atmospheric pressure it converts into a vapour phase.

Other than camphor, Naphthalene, solid CO2, Iodine, etc.

The explanation for the incorrect option:

(B) Distillation: The process by which the components of mixtures are separated based on the difference in their boiling points. It can be used to separate miscible liquids. i.e, liquids which don't form separate layers on mixing.

(C) Crystallization: The process in which solid forms(atoms, molecules, or ions) are highly organized into a structure called crystals. It is used to purify impure solids which form crystals after cooling the heated mixture.

(D) Sedimentation: This process allow the particles of suspension to settle out of the suspension under the effect of gravity where it is used for separating large-sized particles from the liquid part by undergoing sedimentation when left undisturbed.

Therefore, option (A) is the correct answer. i.e., Camphor can easily be purified by the process of sublimation.
