Question

Can we separate alcohol dissolved in water by using a separating funnel? If yes, then describe the procedure. If not, explain.

Solution

As alcohol is completely miscible in the water we can not separate them with the help of a separating funnel.

Separating funnel: It is a device by which we can separate the immiscible liquids on the basis of their density gradient. The one which has a higher density will settle down and the one which has a lower density will be sattle above after leaving them undisturbed for some hours.

Miscible Liquids: The two or more than two liquids that have the same polarity mixed together in a proper manner and form a homogenous mixture and such kinds of mixtures can not be separated by separating funnels.

In the case of the Alcohol and water mixture, the polarity of water and alcohol are different but still, they form a homogenous mixture because of the Hydrogen bond.

Hydrogen bond: The bond which is formed due to attraction between most electronegative elements( F, Cl, O) and hydrogens due to which non-polar solutes also dissolve in polar solvents like water.

For example: A mixture of water and alcohol

Immiscible liquids: The two or more two liquids that do not have the same polarity will not mix together to form a homogenous mixture and their mixture which will be heterogeneous will be immiscible liquids.

For example: Oil and water mixture
