Question

Carbon is a metal or non-metal?

Open in App
Solution

Carbon is a solid non-metal having an atomic no. 6 and atomic mass of 12.

Metals and non-metals have some properties on the basis of which we can categorize the elements either in metals or non-metals.

Properties of metals:

  • metals are lustrous in nature.
  • metals are malleable.
  • metals are ductile.
  • metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

Properties of non-metals:

  • Metals are non-lustrous in nature.
  • metals are non-malleable.
  • metals are non-ductile.
  • metals are bad conductors of heat and electricity.

So, by observing all these properties we can conclude that carbon is non-metal because carbon is non-lustrous, non-malleable, and non-ductile in nature.
