Here, the surds are given to compare are 72 and 53

Square the surds:

722=72×72⇒722=7×2×2×2⇒722=49×2⇒722=98

And

532=53×53⇒532=5×3×5×3⇒532=25×3⇒532=75

Step 2. Compare the numbers.

Compare the square of 72 and 53 which are 98 and 75 respectively:

98>75⇒72>53

Hence, the 72 is greater than 53 .
