Define Respiratory Quotient (Rq)? Calculate The Respiratory Quotient For Carbohydrate.

Open in App
Solution

Respiratory Quotient (R.Q.):-

  1. Respiratory Quotient (R.Q.) is defined as the ratio of carbon dioxide released and the oxygen used during the process of respiration.
  2. Respiratory Quotient (R.Q.) is also referred to as the respiratory ratio. The normal Respiratory Quotient (R.Q.) ranges between 0.7 and 1.0

RQ=VolumeofCarbonDioxideProducedVolumeofOxygenConsumed

The respiratory quotient or RQ value of carbohydrates is approximately 1.0.

It is calculated by:

RQ=VCO2VO2VCO2=ProductionofCarbonDioxideVO2=VolumeofOxygenconsumedC6H12O6+6O2ā†’6CO2+6H2ORQ=6VCO26VO2=1.0
