Mitochondria:

  1. Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions.
  2. Chemical energy is produced by the mitochondria during the process of respiration
  3. As the result of respiration, energy is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
  4. They are called the powerhouse of the cell.
  5. They are organelles that act like a digestive system that takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy-rich molecules for the cell.
