Question

Depletion of the ozone layer is mainly due to ____________.

Open in App
Solution

  1. The ozone layer is a protective layer (in the stratosphere) that absorbs the harmful ultraviolet radiations coming from the sun.
  2. The thickness of ozone is gradually thinning day by day, this phenomenon is known as ozone depletion.
  3. Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs are the main cause of ozone layer depletion.
  4. These are released by refrigerators, spray aerosols, air-conditioners, etc.
  5. The molecules of chlorofluorocarbons in the stratosphere are broken down by ultraviolet radiations and release chlorine atoms.
  6. These atoms react with ozone and destroy it.

Hence the depletion of the ozone layer is mainly due to Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
