Question

Derive the formula for height and area of an equilateral triangle

Open in App
Solution

The altitude of an equilateral triangle is 18 inches. What is the length of a side? | Socratic

Find the Area of the triangle:

AreaofTriangle=12xbasexheight

Here, base=aandheight=h

As also perpendicular drawn from a vertex to side bisect the side in equilateral triangle.

Applying Pythagoras theorem in the triangle

a2=h2+a22

h2=a2a24

h2=3a24

h=3a2

Now,

Put the value of ‘h’ in the area of the triangle equation

AreaofTriangle=12xbasexheight

Area=12xax3a2

Or

Thus, Area of Equilateral Triangle = 34a2
