Question

Describe fragmentation in spirogyra with the help of a diagram.

Open in App
Solution

Fragmentation:

  1. Fragmentation occurs when an organism breaks off itself and the broken fragments of the organism grow into individual separate organisms.
  2. By this fragmentation, some multicellular species with simple body structures can reproduce.

Steps during fragmentation:

  1. In spirogyra, asexual reproduction takes place by fragmentation, in which the filament breaks into several pieces. Each piece grows as a new individual.
  2. The vegetative filament transforms into a new filament following fragmentation. In order to form a new filament, each fragment undergoes different divisions and elongations.
  3. If it splits into filament when spirogyra reproduces, these filaments later develop into mature filament.
  4. With a difference in salinity and water temperature, fragmentation may be due to mechanical damage or dissolution of the middle lamella.
