Periodic table:
All the known elements are arranged in a tabular form called a periodic table.
Dmitri Mendeleev is often referred to as the Father of the Periodic Table.
According to Mendeleev's periodic table, all the known elements are arranged according to their increasing atomic masses.
The main features of Mendeleev’s periodic table are:
In Mendeleev's periodic table, vertical columns are named as groups, and horizontal rows are named as periods.
There are seven horizontal rows called periods and eight vertical columns called groups.
All the groups are divided into subgroups.
Along with that he left some vacant spaces in the periodic table as he predicted that another element is going to be placed there which will be discovered later.
In this manner, he left a vacant space below aluminium and germanium. As he did not know the elements, he named them Eka- aluminium and Eka- silicon.
Later when other elements were discovered, eka- aluminium was the element gallium which is placed below aluminium in the modern periodic table. Similarly, germanium took the place of eka-silicon which is below silicon in the modern periodic table.
