Ocean productivity

  1. It mostly refers to the organic matter produced by the phytoplankton of the ocean.
  2. Organic matter-producing organisms are mostly single-celled.

The reasons why ocean productivity is less

  1. Oceans are very deep and light cannot penetrate that deep.
  2. There are not as many nutrients in the waters as there are in the the the land. The mineral composition is very less in water, reducing production.
  3. Main food-producing autotrophs in water have a photosynthetic capacity.
  4. Autotrophs in the ocean are not very vascular in comparison to their contemporaries on land.
