The device used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy is called an electric generator.
(a) It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction which states that when a coil is rotated about an axis perpendicular to the direction of the uniform magnetic field, an induced e.m.f. is produced across it.
(b) An electric generator consists of the following 4 components:
1. Armature
2. Field Magnet
3. Slip rings
4. Brushes
(c) In the diagram, N and S are the north and south poles of a magnet.
ABCD is an armature, B1 and B2 are the brushes, and R1 and R2 are slip rings.
(d) The direction of flow of induced current in the coil of a generator is found by applying Fleming's right-hand rule.
(e) When a coil is rotated in the magnetic field, induced e.m.f. produced is maximum when the magnetic field lines are perpendicular to its plane.
(f) Induced e.m.f. is zero or minimum when the magnetic field lines are parallel to the plane of the coil.
