Question

Draw a circle and two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a tangent and the other, a secant to the circle.

Solution

Construction of the given figure

Step 1: Draw a line l and mark a point O on it. With O as centre draw a circle of any convenient radius.

Step 2: Mark a point C on the circumference of the circle such that O,C lie in the same imaginary line.

Step 3: Draw a line AB parallel to the line l passing through the point C.

This line AB is the required tangent to the circle.

Step 4: Now mark a point D inside the circle such that the points C,O,D are on the same imaginary line.

Taking any of the two lines l,AB as reference, draw a parallel line XY passing through point D.

This line XY is the required secant of the circle.

Thus, we have drawn two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a tangent and the other is the secant of the circle.
