Question

Draw ray diagrams showing the image formation by a concave mirror when an object is placed at the center of the curvature of the mirror.

Solution

Concave mirror:

  1. A hollow sphere may be made into a mirror by cutting it into pieces, painting the exterior surface, and using the inside surface as the reflecting surface. This type of mirror is known as a concave mirror.
  2. Light converges at a point when it strikes and reflects back from the reflecting surface of the concave mirror. Hence, it is also known as a converging mirror.
  3. When the concave mirror is placed very close to the object, a magnified, erect, and virtual image is obtained.
  4. However, if we increase the distance between the object and the mirror then the size of the image reduces and a real and inverted image is formed.
  5. Thus, the image formed by the concave mirror can be small or large and can be real or virtual.

Image formation by a concave mirror when an object is placed at the center of the curvature of the mirror:

Hence, if an object is placed at the center of curvature then the image will be formed at the center of curvature.
