Question

How are electrical nerve impulses conveyed from the retina to the brain?

Open in App
Solution

The visual pathway:

  1. Light rays from the visual fields enter the eye pass through the lens and strike the retina.
  2. The retinal ganglion cells that compose the optic nerve, which extends to the optic chiasma where some optic nerves cross over to the opposing side of the brain, are the conduit via which the visual information is transferred.
  3. The information travels via the optic tracts to the thalamus where the lateral geniculate nuclei receive the visual information.
  4. The information travels via optic radiations to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe.
  5. The visual cortex processes this information received via the optic nerve which allows us to see things around us.
