Question

Explain the different processes involved in karyokinesis?

Open in App
Solution

Karyokinesis:

Karyokinesis is the process of division of the nucleus into two or more daughter nuclei either by the process of meiosis or mitosis.

This process is divided into 4 stages:

  1. Prophase:

It is marked by:

  1. With the disintegration of the nuclear envelope, cell organelles begin to disperse as fragments.
  2. The nucleolus disappears and centrosomes move towards opposite poles.
  3. Condensation of chromosomes takes place.

2. Metaphase:

In this phase:

  1. Chromosomes align at the equator, referred to as the metaphase plate or equatorial plate.
  2. Sister chromatids get attached to the spindle fibers.

3. Anaphase:

In this phase:

  1. Separation of sister chromatids takes place.
  2. Their movement towards the opposite poles.

4. Telophase:

This phase is marked by:

  1. Movement of chromosomes towards opposite poles.
  2. All the cell organelles reform.
  3. The reappearance of nuclear envelope and nucleolus.
