Explain the reason behind the differnce in color of the two compounds CuSO4.5H2O and CuSO4.

The oxidation state of CuSO4.5H2O is +2. Hence it has unpaired electrons in it, which gives scope for the d-d transition. Due to this d-d transition the compound exhibits color. In CuSO4 due to the absence of ligand, there is no chance of splitting of d orbitals. Hence. CuSO4 is colorless.
