Figure shows a diagrammatic representation of trees in the afternoon along a sea coast. State on which side is the sea; A or B? Give reasons for your choice.

Solution

The flow of wind during the daytime

  1. In the daytime, the ground is hotter than the water. Hence air over the ground traps the heat.
  2. As the air has trapped the heat, it expands and rises up thereby lowering the pressure above land.
  3. It develops pressure difference between sea area and ground.
  4. Therefore to balance it, the cold air from the sea starts to flow toward the ground which results in all the trees and plants near to sea bending towards the ground.

Side of the sea

In the given figure, the trees are bending toward A which means the wind is flowing from B to A.

According to the above statements, we can say that B is the Seaside and A is the ground side.

Hence, B represents Seaside.
