Question

A body repeating its motion after a certain interval of time is in_______ motion.

Solution

Periodic motion

  1. A motion that repeats itself after equal time intervals is known as periodic motion.
  2. There are one mean and two extreme positions as shown in the figure above.
  3. The mean position is the position of the bob which lies in between two extreme positions. At this position, Kinetic energy is maximum while potential energy is zero.
  4. Extreme position is the position of the bob at the highest point. At this position, potential energy is maximum while kinetic energy is zero.
  5. Examples of periodic motion are a tuning fork or motion of a pendulum if you analyze the motion, you will find that the pendulum passes through the mean position only after a definite interval of time.
  6. Periodic motion is also known as oscillatory motion.
  7. Periodic motion has three significant characteristics: velocity, period, and amplitude.
  8. The two examples of periodic motions are the motion of the pendulum clock and the motion of a swing.

Hence, a motion that repeats itself after equal time intervals is periodic motion.
