Question

Fill in the blanks: The formula unit mass of Ca3(PO4)2 is..................…

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Analyse atomic weights of elements in Calcium Phosphate ( Ca3(PO4)2)

The atomic mass of Calcium (Ca)=40.7u

So, for three Ca atoms, atomic mass = 3×40.7=120.21u

The atomic mass of Phosphorus (P) =30.9u

So, for two P atoms, atomic mass = 2×30.9=61.8u

The atomic mass of Oxygen (O)=16u

So, for eight O atoms, atomic mass = 8×16=128u

Step 2: Analyse formula unit mass

Formula unit mass for Ca3(PO4)2 is:

Ca3(PO4)2=(3×AtomicmassofCa)+(2×AtomicmassofP)+(8×AtomicmassofO)

=120.21+61.8+128=309.9u310u

Hence, the formula unit mass for Ca3(PO4)2 is 310u.
