Solution

Step 1: Form equations from the given information

Given, 11th term, that is a11=38

and, 16th term, that is a16=73

We know that, an=a+(n-1)d

So, the required equations are,

38=a+10d...(1)73=a+15d...(2)

Solve the two equations by replacing a=38-10d in equation (2),

73=a+15d73=38-10d+15d5d=73-38d=355d=7

Now, replace d=7 in equation (1), we get

38=a+10d38=a+(10×7)a=38-70a=-32

So, the first term is -32

Step 2: Evaluate the required term

We have a=-32,d=7 and n=31

a31=a+(31-1)da31=-32+(30×7)a31=-32+210a31=178

Therefore, the 31st term of the AP is 178.
