Question

Find the perimeters of (i) triangle ABE (ii) the rectangle BCDE in this figure. Whose perimeter is greater?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculate perimeter of ABE

From the figure we get the sides as

AB=52cm,BE=234cm,AE=335cm

Perimeter of a triangle = sum of all three sides of a triangle

p=AB+BE+AE

=52+234+335

=52+114+185

=50+55+7220

=17720=81720cm

Step 2: Calculate perimeter of rectangle BCDE

From the figure we get,

BE=234cm,DE=76cm

We know that the perimeter of a rectangle is given as,

Perimeter =2( length + breadth )

p=2234+76

=2114+76

=233+1412

=476=756cm

Step 3: Compare the perimeters

Perimeter of ABE=81720cm=17720

Perimeter of rectangle BCDE=756cm=476

The LCM of their denominator is 60.

17720=177×320×3=53160

476=47×106×10=47060

Hence the equivalent fractions can be written and compared as,

53160>47060

17720>476

Hence, perimeter of ABE>perimeter of rectangle BCDE

Therefore,

(i) Perimeter of ABE is 81720cm.

(ii) Perimeter of Rectangle BCDE is 756cm.

Hence, perimeter of ABE>perimeter of rectangle BCDE
