Question

For hearing the loudest ticking sound heard by the ear, find the angle x in the Fig.

Solution

Step 1: Calculate angle of incidence

  1. The angle of incidence is always measured with respect to the normal.
  2. We know that normal is always at an angle 90° to the surface.
  3. The angle of Incidence =90°-50°=40°

Step 2: Calculate angle of reflection

  1. According to the law of reflection, the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection are always equal, and they both lie on the same plane along with the normal.
  2. The angle of reflection = The angle of incidence =40°
  3. This angle causes the loudest hearing as the maximum number of sound rays will reflect back through this reflected ray.

Hence, for hearing the loudest ticking sound the angle should be 40°.
