The concepts of freedom, equality and fraternity were promoted by the French Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. Men are born free and stay free and equal in rights, as per this Declaration. Such ideals of liberty and democracy are the greatest global legacies.

Democracy

  1. The form of Government in which people are empowered to choose their Government through elections is known as Democracy.
  2. The most important foundations of Democracy are Right to Life, Voting Rights for all the citizens, equality for all, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, assembly, minority rights.
  3. There are 2 types of democracy – representative democracy and direct democracy.
  4. Presidential and Parliamentary forms of democracies are representative democracy. Here representatives are elected by the people, so that they can deliberate and decide on the laws to govern the nation.
  5. People directly deliberate and decide on legislations in direct democracy.
  6. In democracies the supermajority, majority and consensus approaches have been an integral part of democracies.

Socialism

  1. Socialism is an economic, social and political philosophy.
  2. It encompasses theories and movements.
  3. Social ownership is based on equity, collective, public and cooperative mode. One common element in Socialism is social ownership.
  4. Some of the many different socialist ideologies are Utopian Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Maoism etc.
  5. Socialism changes based on the role of markets and planning in resource allocation, on the structure of management in organizations, and socialists disagree on whether government, particularly existing government, is the correct vehicle for change.
  6. Markets and Non-market forms are two types of socialist systems.
  7. The revolutionary movements of the mid-to-late 18th century gave rise to political philosophy which are part of socialist political movement.

Nationalism

  1. Nationalism is an idea and movement that holds that the nation should be congruent with the state.
  2. Interests of a particular nation are promoted under Nationalism.
  3. Each nation should govern itself, the idea of self determination is one of the crux of nationalism.
  4. Based on a shared singular history, politics (or the government), traditions and belief, shared social characteristics of culture, ethnicity, language, geographic location, religion, nationalism aims to promote national unity and single national identity.
  5. Nationalism aims to preserve the culture and traditions.
  6. It is linked to patriotism, national achievements are recognised, encouraged and respected.
  7. An important driver in independence movements was nationalism.
