Question

From the top of a 7m high building, the angle of elevation of the top of a cable tower is 60° and the angle of depression of its foot is 45°. Determine the height of the tower.

Solution

Step 1: Find the horizontal distance between the tower and the building.

Let us assume that AB=7m be the height of building, EC be the height of the tower.

A is the point from where the angle of elevation of tower is 60° and the angle of depression of its foot is 45°

From the figure, EC=DE+CD

Also, CD=AB=7m and BC=AD

In right triangle ABC, tan45°=ABBC

1=7BC

BC=7m

AD=7m

Step 2: Find the height of the tower.

In right triangle ADE,tan60°=DEAD

3=DE7

DE=73m

So, EC=DE+CD

EC=73+7

EC=71+3m

Hence, the height of the tower is 71+3m.
