Question

Give any two differences between lanthanoids and actinoids.

Open in App
Solution

The difference between lanthanoids and actinoids are:

LanthanoidsActinoids
  • Lanthanides are involved in filling 4f orbitals. Compared to 5f electrons, the binding energy of 4f electrons is comparatively less than it.
  • Actinides are involved in filling 5f orbitals. Compared to 4f electrons, the shielding effect of 5f-electrons is less effective.
  • Except for promethium lanthanides are non-radioactive.
  • Elements in the actinide series are radioactive.
  • Compounds formed by lanthanides are less basic.
  • Compounds formed by actinides are highly basic.
  • For example, Lanthanum(La), Cerium(Ce), etc.
  • For example, Uranium(U), Plutonium(Pu), etc.
