Magnets come in two main types: permanent magnets and electromagnets. A permanent magnet is always magnetized whereas the magnetism of electromagnet works only when powered by electricity.
Advantages of electromagnets
- One of the most important features of an electromagnet is the ability to change its magnetic force. When no electric current flows through the magnet’s wires, it has no magnetic force.
- An electromagnet can produce a strong magnetic field and its strength can be controlled by changing the strength of the current or the number of turns in the coil.
- The polarity of an electromagnet can be changed by reversing the direction of the current that flows in the solenoid.
