Solution

Trachea:

  1. The trachea is also known as the windpipe.
  2. It is a tube of around 10cm to 12cm.
  3. It acts as a pathway for the conduction of air from the nose to the lungs.

Functions of the trachea:

  1. Conduction of air: It conducts air from the nose to the lungs.
  2. Protection: Prevents foreign substances from entering the lungs.
  3. Thermoregulation: It brings the air to the body temperature so that the mucosa does not get affected.

Rings of cartilage are present in the trachea because:

  1. Rings of cartilage are present in the trachea to prevent its collapse when the air is not passing through it.
  2. The cartilage is a flexible connective tissue, and it supports the trachea while still allowing it to move and flex during breathing.
  3. They are incomplete because this permits the trachea to collapse slightly to allow food to pass down the oesophagus.

  4. The open part of the cartilage rings faces the oesophagus, permitting the trachea to be compressed slightly when the oesophagus bulges outward when the food is swallowed.
