Question

Give reason: Energy flow through an ecosystem is one way.

Solution

The reason why energy flow through an ecosystem is one way:

  1. In an ecosystem, the flow of energy is said to be one way because it passes on from one organism to another in a food chain but never comes back.
  2. Plants directly use energy from the sun to make food via the process of photosynthesis.
  3. Plants are the very first organism to convert solar energy into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds. That’s why they are called producers.
  4. The energy produced by the plants is then passed on to the primary consumer ( herbivores), which are then passed on to secondary consumers (animals that feed on both primary consumers).
  5. This energy is further passed on to the tertiary consumers (animals that feed on both secondary and primary consumers)
  6. In this entire process of energy flow in an ecosystem, energy is passed on only in a unidirectional way and never returns back to the sun.
