  • An element is the simplest form of matter, made up of only one type of atom which cannot be split into simpler substances by any chemical or physical method.
  • A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements combined chemically in a definite (or constant) proportion by mass or weight.
  • At present, there are 118 elements known to us.
  • Globally more than 350,000 compounds are produced or used.
  • Elements are of three types: metals, non-metals, and metalloids.
  • Compounds are of three types on the basis of bonds between atoms ionic, metallic, and organic compounds.
  • Examples: Na, Mg, Sc, etc.
  • Examples: NaCl, CaO, H2O, etc.
