Question

How is the left-hand rule and principle of an electric motor related?

Solution

Fleming’s left-hand rule

  1. Fleming’s left-hand rule states that, if the forefinger, the central finger, and the thumb of the left hand are stretched in such a way that they are mutually perpendicular to each other.
  2. If the central finger shows the direction of current and the forefinger shows the direction of the magnetic field, then the thumb will give the direction of deflecting force.

Relation between Fleming’s left-hand rule and electric motor

  1. The magnetic effect of electric current is the main principle of electric motors.
  2. The current-carrying circuit (armature) in an electric motor experiences torque when it is placed in a magnetic field.
  3. The directions of the magnetic field, electric current, and deflecting force are find out by using Fleming’s left-hand rule.
