How many latitudes are there in total ?

Open in App
Solution

Answer:

Latitudes and longitudes are commonly referred to as geographical coordinates. They provide a systematic network of lines upon which the position of various surface features of the earth, can be represented. With the help of these coordinates, the location, distance and direction of various points can be easily determined. The locations on the Earth’s surface are determined by two reference lines known as latitude and longitude. In the table below, we have given the various difference between latitude and longitude.

Latitude and longitude

All parallel circles from the equator up to the poles are called parallels of latitudes. Latitudes are measured in degrees.

  • Parallels of latitudes are parallel circles from the equator up to the poles. They are measured in degrees.
  • The equator represents the zero degrees latitude.
  • Its distance from the equator to either of the poles is one-fourth of a circle round the earth, it will measure ¼th of 360 degrees, i.e. 90°. Thus, 90 degrees north latitude marks the North Pole and 90 degrees south latitude marks the South Pole.
  • Lines of latitude are known as parallels and there are 180 degrees of latitude in total.
  • The total number of latitudes is 180 and the total number of longitudes is 360.
