How is silk produced from silkworms?

Open in App
Solution

Sericulture:

Sericulture is the process of gathering silkworms and harvesting the cocoon to collect the materials.

Process of silk production:

  1. Once the female silkworm has laid the eggs, they hatch after some time.
  2. The hatched silkworms are incubated in a specified environment.
  3. Once they reach the larvae stage, they are allowed to spin cocoons.
  4. Once they have enclosed themselves within the cocoon, the cocoons are boiled in water so as to soften them and remove the gum.
  5. Now the threads undergo bleaching and then are dried.
  6. The threads are put in a pot containing hot indigo leaves and water.
  7. This process is repeated a number of times to ensure proper colouring, quality, and tone.
  8. The dyed silk is then unwinded so that it lies flat.
  9. The strands are then woven.
  10. In case the cloth requires some sort of design, it undergoes printing through digital or screen printing methods.
  11. Then the silks are finished.
