  • Bond order is defined as the number of chemical bonds formed between a pair of atoms and indicates the stability of a bond.
  • The Bond Order Formula is given by;

Bondorder(B.O)=12(numberofbondingelectronsnumberofantibondingelectrons)=12[NbNa]

  • Where, Nb = the number of bonding electrons and Na = the number of antibonding electrons.

Step 2; Calculation of Bond order for CO32-:-

  • To Calculate the Bond Order Of CO32-, we can first consider its resonance structure given as;

  • Here the total number of bonds in the Carbonate ionCO32- =4
  • Also the number of bond groups between individual atoms =3
  • By dividing the bonding groups between the individual atoms by the total number of bonds

=43=1.33

Therefore, the bond order of the Carbonate ion CO32- is calculated to be1.33.
