When benzoic acid (C₆H₅COOH) is reacted with Soda lime solution (NaOH in Ca(OH)₂), decarboxylation reaction takes place with the removal of Na₂CO₃ and the resultant product which is formed will be benzene molecule. The reaction can be written as
C₆H₅COOH + 2NaOH → C₆H₅ + Na₂CO₃
This reaction is called soda lime reaction.
