Question

How does Trigonometry help in measuring heights and distance?

Open in App
Solution

Define trigonometry and its uses:

  1. Trigonometry is the study of the relationship between the length of sides and angles of a triangle.
  2. Trigonometry has found its importance in multiple fields. It has found its applications in the fields ranging from Engineering to Architecture to Astronomy as well.
  3. Height is the measurement of an object in the vertical direction and distance is the measurement of an object from a particular point in the horizontal direction.
  4. If we imagine a line connecting the point of observation to the top most point of the object then the horizontal line, vertical line, and the imaginary slant line (from the exterior end of the horizontal line to the top of the object) will form a triangle.
  5. If we know the lengths of the horizontal and vertical lines, we can calculate the angle formed at the exterior end of the horizontal line (formed between the line horizontal and the slant line). Also, we can calculate the angle formed at the top between the vertical and the slant line.
  6. If we know any one of the angles formed at the top or at the exterior end of the horizontal line and any one of the sides, we can calculate the other two sides.

Hence, Trigonometry can help in measuring heights and distance as explained above.
