Question

How we can convert methyl alcohol into ethyl alcohol?

Open in App
Solution

Conversion of Methyl alcohol (CH3OH) to Ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH)

  • Step 1: Conversion of Methanol (CH3OH) to Chloromethane (CH3Cl).
  1. When Methyl alcohol (CH3OH) reacts with Hydrogen chloride (HCl).
  1. It leads to the substitution of the alcoholic group and results in the formation of Chloromethane. CH3OH(l)Methanol+HCl(aq.)HydrogenchlorideCH3Cl(aq.)Chloromethane+H2O(aq.)Water
  • Step 2: Conversion of Chloromethane (CH3Cl) to Ethanenitrile(CH3CN).
  1. When Chloromethane is reacted with an aqueous alcoholic solution of KCN.
  2. There is the formation of Ethanenitrile(CH3CN).
    CH3Cl(aq.)Cholomethane+KCN(s)PottasiumcynideCH3CN(aq.)Ethanenitrile+KCl(s)Pottasiumchloride
  • Step 3: Conversion of Ethanenitrile(CH3CN) to Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH).
  1. When hydrolysis of Ethaninitrile (CH3CN) in a hot acidic or alkaline medium is carried out.
  2. It leads to the formation of Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH).
    CH3CNEthanenitrile(aq.)H+,H2OCH3COOHEthanoicacid(aq.)
  • Step 4: Conversion of Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) to Ethanol (C2H5OH).
  1. Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) on reduction in the presence of strong reducing agents such as LiAlH4.
  2. It leads to the formation of ethyl alcohol or ethanol (C2H5OH).
    CH3COOHEthanoicacid(aq.)LiAlH4C2H5OHEthanol(aq.)
