Question

How will the image formed by a convex lens be affected if the central portion of the lens is wrapped in black paper?

Solution

Convex lens

  1. A convex lens is a lens that diverges straight light beams.
  2. The image formed by a convex lens depends on the position of the object.

Formation of image when the central portion is wrapped in black paper

  1. If the central portion of the lens is wrapped in black paper, then a small number of light rays will pass the lens by refraction.
  2. The image will be formed, but the intensity or the brightness of the image will be reduced as compared to the image when the black paper is absent.
  3. It does not make any difference in the size and shape of the produced image.

Diagram

From the figure, it is clear that in case of the lens with black paper wrapped, less number of rays will pass and hence the image will have less intensity compared to the image formed by the mirror without any wrapping.

So, the image will be formed but it has less brightness.
