Solution

Explain using displacement and distance:

  1. We know that the shortest distance between two points is called displacement.
  2. Since displacement depends on the initial and final point of the path it is a vector quantity.
  3. During displacement of a body, only one direction of motion is present.
  4. For example, if the distance traveled by a body is the shortest path taken by it, we can say that the distance and displacement are equal.
  5. In the given questions, the body traverses a distance and it does not change its direction.
  6. Hence, we can say that the distance traveled and the displacement undergone by this body is equal.

Hence, if a body does not change its direction during the course of its motion, then its distance and displacement are said to be equal.
