Question

if angle of minimum deviation of a prism is equal to refracting angle of the prism, then refractive index μ of material of prism satisfies

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given

The refractive index of the prism is μ.

Let δm be the angle of minimum deviation and A be the refracting angle of the prism.
Then as per given data, δm=A

Step 2: Formulas used

We know that,
μ=sinA+δm2sinA2

Step 3: Calculate the refractive index

Given δm=A, thus,

μ=sinA+A2sinA2μ=sinAcosA2+cosAsinA2sinA2sinx+y=sinxcosy+cosxsinyμ=sinAcosA2sinA2+cosAsinA2sinA2μ=2sinA2cosA2cosA2sinA2+cosAμ=2cos2A2+cosAμ=21+cosA2+cosAcosx2=1+cosx2μ=1+2cosA

The angle of prism A can only lie between 0° and 90°.

Thus, μ lies between μ=1+2cos90°=1 and μ=1+2cos0°=3

Therefore, the range of the refractive index will be 1μ3.
