Question

In a uniform magnetic field, the field lines are

Solution

The properties of magnetic field lines are:

  1. One of the characteristic properties of a magnet is its magnetic field lines.
  2. The lines seem to move out of the magnet from the north pole.
  3. The lines seem to move into the magnet from the south pole.
  4. These magnetic field lines never intersect each other.
  5. The tangent at each point gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
  6. Inside the magnet, the lines travel from the south pole to the north pole.
  7. Outside the magnet, the lines travel from the north pole to the south pole.
  8. Therefore, magnetic field lines always appear in a closed loop.
  9. The density of magnetic field lines present in a region in space gives the strength of the magnetic field at that point.
  10. Hence, in a uniform magnetic field, the magnetic field lines are equidistant and parallel to each other.
