Question

In an electrochemical process, a salt bridge is used to _______

Open in App
Solution

Electrolytic cell:-

  1. It is a device which is used for the production of electric current.
  2. In it electric current is formed by the spontaneous Oxidation-Reduction reaction.
  3. These redox reactions take place between two different metals, each immersed in two separated beakers or half cells containing their respective metal ion solution.

Salt bridge:-

  1. It is a device in tube shape, which is used to connect the oxidation - reduction half cell compartments.
  2. Actually it acts as a junction between the anodic and the cathodic compartments in an electrolytic cell.
  3. It is filled with electrolytic solutions such as Potassium chloride (KCl) or any other different chlorides.
  4. It is used for the free flow of the ions between the oxidation and reduction half-cell components, actually, it is a pathway for the ion transfer between two half cells.
  5. This transfer of ions takes place, for maintaining charge balance or electrical neutrality between the two half cells.
  6. Example of the salt bridge which consists of strong electrolyte :- KCl,AgNO3.

Therefore, In an electrochemical process, a salt bridge is used to maintain the charge balance in the two half cells.
