Question

In Fig., $ AB$ and $ CD$ are two diameters of a circle (with center $ O$) perpendicular to each other and $ OD$ is the diameter of the smaller circle. If $ 0A=7 cm$ find the area of the shaded region.

Solution

Step 1: Find the area of shaded circle

From the given condition the radius 0A=7cm

OD is the diameter of the shaded circle and also the radius of the big circle .

OD=7cm

We know that area of circle

=πr2rtheradiusofcircle

Therefore the area of the circle whose diameter is OD is

=π·OD22=π·722=227·494=38.5cm2

Step 2: Find the area of shaded arc

Area of the triangle whose base is AB and height is OC is

Area of triangle

=12×Base×Height=12×AB×OC=12×14×7AB=2OA=14cmandOC=OA=7cm=49cm2

Area of the half circle whose radius is OC IS

Area of half =circle=πr2rtheradiusofcircle

=π272=227×2×49=77cm2

Therefore the area of the shaded arc is

=Areaofhalfcircle-Areaofthetriangle=77-49=28cm2

Step 3: Find the area of shaded region.

The area of the shaded region is

Areaoftheshadedarc+Areaoftheshadedcircle=28+38.5=66.5cm2

Hence the area of the shaded region is 66.5cm2
