Question

Is a cubic function always increasing?

Open in App
Solution

Define a cubic function :

Let f(x) be a cubic function.

f(x)=ax3+bx2+cx+d

The derivative of f(x) may be used to determine whether f(x) is increasing or decreasing at any intervals in its domain.

If f'(x)>0at each point in an interval I, the function is increasing

If f'(x)<0 at each point in an interval I, the function is decreasing.

Hence, it depends on the function whether it is increasing or decreasing.
