Question

Why light waves can be polarized?

Open in App
Solution

Polarisation of light:

  1. Polarization may be defined as a phenomenon, which is caused due to the wave nature of electromagnetic radiation.
  2. Light that is reflected or transmitted through certain media so that all vibrations are restricted to a single plane is known as the polarisation of light.

Explanation:

  1. Light can be polarized because these waves are transverse in nature.
  2. It has both an electric field and a magnetic field and both are vibrating in nature.
  3. The vibration plane in an electric field is always perpendicular to the direction of the light wave.
  4. This phenomenon shown by the light is due to its transverse nature
  5. If the waves are transverse in nature, then the vibrations are always perpendicular to the direction wave.

Hence, light waves can be polarized because these waves are transverse in nature.
