Materials that show very small plastic range beyond elastic limit are called ________.

Solution

Elasticity:

  1. The ability of a material that is deformed due to application of a force to return to its original shape and size after the deforming force is removed is known as elasticity.
  2. The maximum extent to which a material can be stretched without being deformed permanently is known as its elastic limit.

Plastic range:

  1. The range of values of stress (force acting per unit area) at which a material is deformed permanently and can no longer retain its original form even after removing the force is known as plastic limit of the material.

Brittle materials:

  1. The materials that break even when a tiny force is applied over there elastic limit are known as brittle materials.
  2. In these materials, crack can occur without deforming the plastic and soon result in breakage of the material.
  3. Brittle materials include glass, ceramic, graphite and some other alloys that have low plasticity (the quality of being easily shaped).

Hence, materials that show very small plastic range beyond elastic limit are called brittle materials.
