Question

Meena draws magnetic field lines of the field close to the axis of a current-carrying circular loop. As she moves away from the centre of the circular loop she observes that the lines keep on diverging. How will you explain her observation?

Solution

Magnetic field:

  1. The magnetic field of a current-carrying conductor
  2. The magnetic field is inversely proportional to the distance from the conductor

B=μoI4π×2πR(x2+R2)32(AccordingtoBiot-SavartLaw)

Explanation:

  1. In the equation shown above, x is the distance from the circular loop.
  2. If we substitute x=0 that is when the wires held by Meena are held in the center of the loop, we will get maximum magnetic strength due to which the lines representing magnetism will almost be straight.
  3. As we move away from the circular loop, magnetic strength decreases, and therefore lines curve a bit that is they diverge

We conclude that Meena's observation is accurate due to the fact that the strength of the magnetic circular loop is inversely proportional to the distance.
