The Early Nationalists, also known as the Moderates, were a group of political leaders in India active between 1885 and 1907. Some of the famous moderate leaders were Madan Mohan Malviya, M.G.Ranade, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee. In 1907, Congress was split into two factions: The radicals, led by Tilak, advocated civil agitation and direct revolution to overthrow the British Empire and the abandonment of all things British. Some of the famous radicals were Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Aurobindo Ghose.
