Question

Name the motion that is not explained by the Universal law of gravitation.

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Universal Law of Gravitation

This law states that every object in the universe attracts every other object with force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

This force acts along the line joining the centers of two objects.

Mathematically, FMmr2, Where F=Force, M=mass of the larger body, m= mass of the smaller body, r= distance between them.

Step2: This law explained the following phenomena

  1. The force by virtue of which we are bound to the Earth.
  2. The revolution of the Moon around the Earth.
  3. The revolution of planets around the Sun.
  4. Tide arises due to the Moon and the Sun.

Step3: The motion is not explained by the Universal law of gravitation

  1. The motion of electrons in an atom is not explained by gravitational law.
  2. This motion is governed by electrostatic force.

Thus, the motion of electrons in an atom is not explained by the Universal law of gravitation.
